  • Situation/Exposition
  • Mathilde is unhappy that she was born into the lower class and has no hope of getting any luxuries in everyday life.
  • Complication
  • Mathilde's husband gives her a letter that invites her to an evening reception. However, she states that she does not what to go because it would do her no good.
  • Man vs. Self- Mathilde has nothing to wear to the affair. Man vs. Self- She wants a jewel to wear but does not have anything that is decent.
  • Conflict
  • Mathilde gets a new dress, and then borrows a diamond necklace from Mme. Forestier. Lastly, she goes on to attend the evening reception.
  • Development
  • Climax
  • Mathilde returns from the dance only to find out that the necklace is missing! Mathilde and her husband look and look but can not find it.
  • Mathilde buys a replacement necklace for Mme. Forestier and works 10 years to pay it completely off. Then, she meets Mme. Forestier again and confesses to loosing the original necklace. However, Mme. Forestier breaks the news that the original was made out of paste and was worth no more than five hundered franks. All in all, Mathilde gets a natural consequence for being untruthful.
