Tommorow my dream finally comes true, I get to be married. I never thought this day would come especially since I'm a slave...I've finally fallen in love with someone of my social stature...he's literally just another slave and his name is Dred Scott.
Ever since I married Dred and became owned by our master Dr. Emerson, Dred and I having been moving all over the place. Each time the Army reassigns Dr. Emerson he leaves us behind and then calls for us almost 2 months later. For example, right now we are taking a 1,000 mile trip up the Mississippi to rejoin him in St. Louis. Unfortunately though, I couldn't bring any of the friends that I made so that they could get a chance at freedom.
Dr. Emerson died leaving his wife as a widow , and I guess her way of grieving was to try and sell us to another Army captain but that didn't work out. So to try to prevent anymore situations like this my husband tried offering 200$ to Mrs. Emerson but of course, her being the stuck up snob that she is refused the offer which led my husband and I to take the matter to court.
When we first went to court, it was hard to make a case because we couldn't prove that we were owned by Mrs. Emerson so we had to have a retrial. That retrial came in 1850, where we were finally granted our freedom. But, then of course, nothing good comes without a price, the freedom that we earned ended up being taken away from us two years later. So here we are again with our lawyers appealing to the Supreme Court.
Trying to be served justice was hard considering the fact that Mrs. Emerson's brother tries to claim us saying that he owned us. Also, the Supreme Court doesn't want to consider Dred as a citizen for the simple fact that he's darker or African American, and whatever happens to him happens to me which means that I was considered even lesser than Dred.
After 10 years of fighting for our freedom right next to my husband through the entire ordeal, we have once again regained our freedom. I am truly happy that I was able to go on this journey with him and experience first hand what it is like to fight for what you believe in.
