"He flattened himself on the limb and through the leaves he watched ass the man approached....It was Genera Zaroff he made his way along with his eyes fixed in utmost concentration on the ground before him. He paused almost beneath the tree he dropped to his knees and studied the ground"

The narrator Says how Rainsford was hiding in the trees from General Zaroff trying not to be spotted while he walked by and Rainsford was worried that he would be spotted
The narrator now explains how he made a trap so when Zaroff goes by he hits the tripwire and a big tree is supposed to come down and swing on him and this is called the Malay Mancatcher as he was determined for Zarof to set the trap off
Narrator explains how Rainsford made a hole for Zarof and then hes hears his trap get set off and Rainsford is very confuses by the fact thst Zarof did not fall in until he realizes that it ws no him but one of his dogs that did fall in the trap and get killed
When Rainsford is in the tree he hears Zaroff and his dogs with Ivan coming by so he has to use a technique that he learned from hunting so he can make his way down the tree without being spotted very quickly and quietly as he is scared to be spotted
"He slid down the tree he caught hold of a springy young sapling and it he fastened his hunting knife, with his blade pointing down the trail."
Zaroff goes home and eats after a long day and Rainsford is in his curtains in his bedroom very anxious not to get caught and ready to jump out at any moment and finish the game off
