At the beggining of the story, Scout is 5 years old and lives with her 9 year old brother, Jem, and her father, Atticus in Maycomb County, Alabama.
Scout and Jem have a summer friend, Dill, that stays next to their home when he visits.
Throughout the story, Jem, Scout, and Dill try to see Arthur(Boo) Radley and even try to communicate with him.
Due to rumors about Boo Radley, the kids are scared of him and think he is probably a bad person.
Scout has to learn to see things from other's perspective and has to face many consequences due to this such as with her classmate and teacher.
Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell and Atticus takes the case which many disprove, calling Atticus an African-American lover including Maycomb and their family.
Tom Robinson is declared guilty despite all the evidence showing that he is innocent and later dies. Scout and Jem are shocked to see the people of their community doing something so unfair to an innocent man.
Months later on the night of the Halloween festival, Robert Ewell attacks Scout and Jem but Boo Radley defends and them and kills Ewell with a kitchen knife.
To protect Boo Radley's privacy, the sherif proposes they lie about the incident but Atticus doesn't feel like he could be a good parent if he did so. However, Scout tells him it's okay after finally learnign to see someone else's perspectve.
