Lizabeth, her brother, and their friends decided to destroy the marigolds. This angers Miss Lottie and eventually her son John Burke.
Lizabeth sees her dad crying, and her mom comforting him. This confuses her, because the dad was the family foundation. Seeing him cry over money, made her go and destroy the marigolds.
Lizabeth feels remorse for her actions. She now understands that Miss Lottie never had a good life, and that these marigolds were her true happiness. She now knows she must become an adult.
