  • He should be guilty for what he had done to the government
  • Accused
  • In The New York Weekly Journal that were critical of colonial Governor William Cosby's arbitrary rule.
  • Hamilton's Defense
  • John should not be guilty he just said what was right and not lying
  • The government wanted all the newspaper burned of what it said about them. 
  • Jury's Decision
  • Therefore, the trial judge, who had been hand picked by Governor Cosby in the first place, instructed the jury to return a verdict of "guilty" because Zenger had admitted to printing the statements.
  • Life with the 1st Amendment
  • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion
  • However, Zenger's brilliant defense lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, asked the jury to consider wether or not 
  • Hamilton's lengthy summation to the jury still stands as an eloquent defense of a free press.

  • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
