Storyboard Text

  • There are three parts of the Cell Theory.  Schleiden and Schwann are credited to building it.  Other scientists, such as Hooke, Brown and Virchow added to it.
  • What they see:
  • Teacher: "Schleiden looked at plant cells under the microscope."
  • Wow! It seems plants and animals are made of living cells!
  • Teacher:  "Schwann looked at animal cells under the microscope."
  • "Cells are made of one or more cells."
  • Aha! I shall name them cells after the rooms the monks live in!
  • Teacher: "But many years prior,  Robert Hooke discovered the first cells by looking at a cork. "
  • Teacher: "Robert Brown was a botanist, and he made a discovery about the cells:"
  • Interesting!  It seems as though there is a dark spot in every cell!  I must call it the nucleus!
  • "Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of life."
  • This mother cell is splitting to form another cell.
  • Teacher: "Rudolph Virchow corrected one of the parts of the old cell theory-cells are not randomly born, but they come from other cells."
  • It looks like "cells come from pre-existing cells!"
  • To summarize, there are three parts to the cell theory: all living things are made of one or more cells; cells are the basic unit of structure and function; and cells come from pre-existing cells.
