  • In the year 1212, over 20,000 children left Germany and France to march towards the Mediterranean. Most children between 9 and 12 years old.
  • A shepherd boy in France named Stephen preached about the Crusade. He stirred up lots of children, But french officials stopped many from going. In Germany Nicholas persuaded thousands of children to leave on a Crusade.
  • The Children came by 2 holding hands or in small groups. They would go to towns and villages asking for food and shelter. The people would give these "Innocent" children what they asked for. They had no money or food and no idea where Jerusalem was.
  • Some Muslims offered to take the children across to Palestine on their ships, they did not ask for money because they loved the holy cross.
  • Over 5,000 children left Marseille, but none of them reached Palestine. A few ships went down in storms, but most of them unloaded the children in the slave markets of the East.
