Cole's learning moments...

Storyboard Text

  • Cole figured he wouldn't even be in a jail cell if Peter Driscal had known how to fight back. Doctors' reports warned he might suffer permanent damage.(Peter) Page 8
  • "Serves him right"
  • "Uh, I'm Cole Matthews, and I'm here because I really screwed up. I know what I did was wrong, and I want Peter to know I'm sorry for everything. I want to ask this Circle to help me get over my anger." Page 39
  • The gas ignited, and flames spread quickly into a steady blaze that crept over the boxes. As the fire became an inferno, Cole tried to swallow the bitter taste that had come to his mouth. Page 25
  • This was a road block for Cole because his actions lead him to juvenile detention and he is blaming his actions on Peter. Later on he realizes that he shouldn't have blamed Peter.
  • If Cole really wants this opportunity he has to prove to people that he wants to change. If people don't believe him he will not get the opportunity.
  • When Cole lit the shed on fire, he realized that it was a horrible idea. All of his supplies were located in the shed. He wanted to show his strength and that he didn't need help from anyone or anything to survive.
  • In this moment Cole realizes that he has lost power and strength.
  • Finally, using only his elbows, he squirmed and crawled his way over the slippery rocks and up onto the grassy ground above the tide line. There he lay spent and shivering, his body bruised, his cold skull throbbing in rhythm with his heartbeat. Page 42
  • Cole feels powerless in this moment and has no strength to fight back.
  • Cole never even had time to raise the knife before the bear was on him, clubbing him down with a powerful blow. Cole's body folded and collapsed to the ground. Before he could roll away, another crushing paw shoved his face into the dirt. His jaw struck a rock. Page 65
  • Cole finally realizes that he isn't as powerful as he thinks. He has lost all control.
  • Never in his life had he felt so exposed, so vulnerable, so helpless. He had no control. To this storm, he was as significant as a leaf. Cole blinked stunned realization. He had always been this weak. How could he have ever thought he truly controlled anything? Page 78
