"Why'n't you get Candy to shoot his old dog and give him one of the pups to raise up?" (pg. 16).
George and Lennie walk through the forest south of Soledad as the Salinas River runs through the forest. Lennie has been carrying a dead mouse in his pocket throughout their journey from Weed to south Soledad.
George and Lennie arrive on the farm and meet Curley, Curley's wife, Candy, Candy's dog, Carlson, and Slim. Carlson tries to convince Candy to kill his dog and George warns Lennie to stay away from Candy.
Carlson finally kills Curley's dog, after successfully convincing Candy. Curley gets into an altercation with Lennie and loses as Lennie crushes Curley's hand.
Crooks' privacy is invaded as Lennie and Curley's wife enter his shack of a room. Curley's wife uses multiple racist and derogatory slurs to diminish any semblance of power that Crooks thinks he has.
Lennie pets Curley's wife's hair and in an attempt to stop her from yelling, he accidentally snaps her neck and kills her. As a response to his murderous action, Lennie returns to the forest from the first chapter and hides.
Curley, Carlson, and Slim follow George into the forest from chapter one. In order to prevent Curley or any of Curley's goons from avenging the death of Curley's wife, George kills Lennie.
