Fear is portrayed in every way in this book. From the beginning of the story to the end of the story the reader is supposed to see that fear is present through the setting, characters, and the whole purpose of the book. The story is about a old man and his sister who live in a haunted house that portrays sin and fear to the reader.
The death of Lady Madeline in this story symbolizes death which leads back to fear. Also, the old man had so much fear of her rising from the dead he ended up dying of fear.
The sin in this story is the old man, it shows how he is weak and how Lady Madeline is strong. The old man pictures that Lady Madeline rises from the dead, this scared him so much that he dies a weak sinful old man. How the old mans imagines the whole scene shows he is filled with fear and sin.
