One night during the Great Depression, while Lizabeth and her brother are alone in their room, Lizabeth overhears her parents talking about how her mom has a job and her dad doesn't. all of a sudden, her dad starts crying. This makes Lizabeth really sad, so she decides to wake up her brother. Once he woke up, they went out the window and ran.
When Lizabeth and her brother went out the window, they ran to crank old Miss Lottie's house. Lizabeth, while crying, ran into Miss Lottie's precious marigolds. She tore them out, stomped on them, and threw them all over the ground. Miss Lottie, came over and just stared. There was nothing left to protect so her face didn't show anger, but it showed emptyness.
After Lizabeth ruined her marigolds, she never replanted them and dies a couple years later. Lizabeth still thinks back on the day when she destroyed Miss Lottie's marigolds and continues to regret doing it. Lizabeth thinks of this act as her last act of childhood. She has now planted her own marigolds and is living happily in her new life as an adult.
