The exposition of Josefs chapter is in the beginning when Nazi soliders break into Josef's home and take his father to a concentration camp
The rising action of Josef's chapter is on a train with his mother and sister to meet there father because he had been at a concentration camp. On the way Josef takes off his Jewish arm band and sneeks to the other side of the train and gets caught by a Nazi youth, but the Nazi youth was kind enough to let Josef go.
You can only save one. Who will it be? Little boy or little girl?
Josef his mother and ruthie (his sister) are forced to leave Josef's father behind in Cuba.
While on the ship the U.S turned down the entrance of all the refugees on the ship. So the ship had to reroute back to Germany.
Nazi soliders catch Josef and his family while they try to escape there apartment. Josef's mother try's to pay the Nazi soldiers all the money they had to try to save her family. The soldiers take the money but give Josef's mother a tough decision to pick one of her children to live and the other sent to a concentration camp. But Josef steps up and lets his sister live.

Since Josef took his life for his sister she is able live a long and happy life.
