  • Chosen
  • Jonas your job will be receiver!
  • Happiness
  • Close your eyes and think deeply in your thoughts, this will be your first memory.
  • Pain
  • Jonas is given the job of receiver which is one of the most important job, this is a big turning point in the plot because it sparks the start of Jonas' journey and him questioning his life and the community. This position in the community is "Such a very, very rare selection" (pg 82)
  • A Greater Understanding
  • This is when Jonas is first given a memory and this is what sparks Jonas' questioning of life and choice, it also leads to him thinking about purpose and meaning. This also shows that Jonas will have to work his way up to bigger and even painful memories, "I started you with memories of pleasure but they will begin to get harder." ( pg 113)
  • Released
  • In this scene Jonas is given a painful memory where he brakes his leg, Jonas had never truly experienced pain and his reaction straight away is to ask for "Relief-of-pain?" (pg 142) Which means that Jonas isn't fully accustomed to emotion.
  • Bonds
  • In this scene the children are given a fee day off working and schooling, all of the children decide to play a gun game, because of Jonas' memory and greater understanding Jonas gets distressed. Jonas pleads to his friends "Don't play this anymore," (pg 170) this is significant because it contrasts the understand Jonas has over the other people of the community.
  • In this scene Fiona is released and Jonas learns about what the 'releasing' actually is and that the community is killing innocent people, in this scene Jonas learns that after the receiver is released all the people in the community receive the memories and how, "It would be a disaster," (pg 181) if the community had to hold the weight Jonas is carrying.
  • In this scene Jonas learns that Gabe is going to be released, for Jonas this is the tipping point where he decides to take Gabe with him away from the community. With this event it makes Jonas feel like he isn't loved/cared for by his family because his father even, "Voted for the release of Gabe," (pg 206) and that Jonas has grown love and kinship for Gabe and wants to care for him.
