"But girls weren't supposed to grow up to be inventors then, much less a girl with autism. No one imagined such a future for Temple"(36).
Signpost: Contrast and Contradiction
"On that December day in 1961 when the girl called her a retard, Temple exploded. This time she threw her history book- and it hit the girl in the eye"(43).
" 'Whats the matter?' Temple didint try to hide it. She told her family the bad news right away. The headmaster of the school had called to say that she had been expelled from school"(43).
" 'Temple has set a record!' her father roared 'she's been failing almost every subject, and now gets kicked out of school! Now you'll have to agree: she should be put away. She can't make it in a normal society' "(47).
" But Temple's mother, who had been researching schools for challenged children, knew there were other roads a person like Temple could take. One of those roads- winding and tree-lined - lead to Rindge, New Hampshire"(47).
"Temple also liked to play pranks that the other girls didn't appreciate. For instance, before class, Temple liked to tie the cords to the venetian blinds to other students' desks"(41).
Now, in our time period, we have many women inventors. This is something important because women could've been inventing things that men wouldn't have thought about, but instead, women were stuck with the jobs they were "supposed" to do.
Word Gap: Venetian Blinds
A child without a disability, and who knows better, would know not to do this, and because of this, Temple got expelled from her school, and wouldn't receive her education anymore.
Temple's mother keeps trying and never gives up. Her mother, instead of sending Temple to an institution that would've most likely not helped her, she sent Temple to a school that helped Temple find friends, and help her find her passion, animals. If Temple's mother wouldn't have sent her to the school in New Hampshire, then her daughter wouldn't have gotten the help that she needed.
Book Club Questions:
How might Temple control her tendencies to act up when someone is making fun of her during school?
Definition: Having numerous horizontal slats that may be set simultaneously at any of several angles so as to vary the amount of light admitted. This is not a technical term.
Temple Grandin wanted to be treated like a regular child, and teen, but the other kids from her school treated her differently, and made fun of her, so she threw a book at a girl that called her a retard, and she got expelled, her parents then decided to send her to a school for challenged children.
Why would Temple throw her book at another student, when she could've tried to reason with the student?
