  • Signpost: Contrast and Contradiction
  • "The remedy she craved came in the summer of her junior year of high school. It wasn't a pill or an operation; it didn't come from a psychologist or from a course of a self-help group. No, it came from a stockyard. 'Animals,' she says 'saved me,' " (60-61).

  • Signpost: Contrast and Contradiction
  • "Suddenly, classes that had been boring seemed interesting- she might glean some nugget of knowledge that could help her improve her squeeze machine. She graduated second in her class at Hampshire Country School,"(71).
  • " ' I was going to do my survey of cattle behavior in cattle chutes even though the professor thought it was stupid!' Her professor's rejection felt like a door slamming shut in her face. But she was learning quickly to find new doors- hidden doors, trap doors, back doors- that no one else could see, that would open to her alone," (73).
  • Mindset: Growth
  • " But what intrigued her the most and fascinated her all summer long, was the cattle chute"(62).
  • The difference in this is that usually, to help with unusual behaviors, you're prescribed medications, you go to a psychologist, or maybe even sometimes, you have to get an operation done on you, but for Temple, animals were her prescription. Animals helped her through her behaviors. This is important because Temple didn't have to go through very many things that were unnecessary, and she found her solution pretty fast.
  • Word Gap: Chute
  • The difference in this is that so many people doubted Temple's success in academics, but she showed them all wrong and showed that she was smarter than everyone thought. This matters because Temple worked through all of the discouragement, unlike a lot of other people can't.
  • Summary: 5-7 Word Gist
  • Temple found a new contraption.
  • Temple is learning from feedback and criticism. Some people get really discouraged at one sight of trouble. but Temple kept trying. If Temple would've given up because of the feedback given, then she wouldn't have accomplished half the things she has in life.
  • Book Club Questions:
  • Definition: a narrow metal enclosure for holding or restraining livestock, in which an animal may be vaccinated, branded, etc. This is a technical term.
  • How might the thought of very heavy animals surrounding Temple make her feel good, and at peace?
  • How will Temple keep the idea of the cow chute alive?
