Storyboard Text

  • This is my cotton plantation in Texas. This is a cotton plantation. It is super easy to grow cotton here as this place has a subtropical climate.I also have a lot of friends who grow wheat and corn around here.
  • There is the dairy farming region. Which is totally unrelated to my field of work. They breed cows and cattle for milk while I grow cotton for...well...cotton. Dairy farming can be done in virtually any place on Earth. But cotton plantations require a specific climate. To be precise it needs a tropical or subtropical climate to grow.
  • And there is this region which makes no sense to me. They call it Shifting Cultivation. They mercilessly slash and burn the forests and use it for only a year or two. Then they go about cutting down even more of the forests. What a waste of forests, land and time... But we plantation owners are simple. We just use the same land over and over again for many years, although we might leave the fields fallow for a while.
  • We cotton farmers face a lot of challenges in our lives and business. Water quantity and quality have been an issue lately. There isn't enough water here in Texas for irrigation and when there is enough water, the quality is not always really good. I am also facing issues with smallholders of this farm. They are not satisfied with their income and some of my workers are also not getting the pay they wanted. But that is not something that I can fix, as it all depends on how well our farm is doing.
  • And then I have to find workers. It is not easy to find too many people willing to work in farms with so many other jobs out there. And my major issue and concern is the soil quality. It is true that I leave the fields fallow at least once every five years, but the soil has been depleting quite fast because of the use of so much fertilizers and pesticides. This will continue to prove to be a severe problem in the future.
  • I do grow crops which is cotton, and yes, this is a type of agriculture --- although we don't eat cotton, but make things like clothes, and bedsheets and pillow covers out of this particular crop. So the food supply chain and food world don't really concern us except for the fact that we have to buy food from them.
