  • This is my house! Under my house is a geothermal heat pump. A geothermal pump is a type of heat pump used to heat and/or cool a building by exchanging heat with ground or body of water.
  • Geothermal cooling works by collecting warm air from inside my house and transferring it out into the ground/body of water. The ground is used as a heat sink in this position.
  • Ground (heat sink)
  • Heat from inside
  • Geothermal heating is the exchange between heat from the ground/a body of water and air to heat my house up.
  • Ground (heat sink)
  • Heat from the ground
  • Radiation comes from the sun which heats the ground. Then the ground heats the air.
  • Convection brings the hot air back into the house from the heat sink when the air in the house gets cool.

  • When the heat from the house touches the ground, it is conduction because the ground is being heated by the heat.
