Storyboard Text

  • Since there is gold in New Caledonia, I believe we will have all the need and wants.
  • Yes, there is and I hope we will
  • Oh no, our home!!!
  • This is our land
  • You're polluting our water
  • Too bad!
  • Gold was founded in New Caledonia (now called British Columbia) in 1858, Governor James Douglas then urgently declared the British colony to keep this news out of American hands. But within months later the population grew from a few hundred to approximately 30 000.
  • *talking about the deal*
  • ...your land will be protected.
  • People came from eastern British Nort America, the United States, Europe, China, and more to prospect for gold. As a result, the immigrants intruded the First Nations home, disrupted their lives and polluted their fishing water.
  • The gold rush then caused violent conflicts between First Nations and the miners
  • People from different countries making friends with each other
  • James Douglas informed the government agents to make deals with the First Nations to settle territorial disputes.
  • The gold rush brought diverse groups together and impacted the Vancouver Islands to welcome more people in their colony and to have a bigger population.
  • There were British and French immigrants, and significant numbers of people of different ethnicities and faith, including Black people, people of the Jewish faith, and people from China.
