"He did not begin to calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned,"
"Your father's no better than than the n****** and trash he works for!"
In these scenes, it is perceived that Jem despises Mrs. Dubose. Through Harper Lee's use of a foil character however, we can see that Jem really does care. After destroying Mrs. Dubose's flower bed, Jem is told to read to her for one month as punishment. When Jem is no longer forced to read to Mrs. Dubose, he still wants to continue reading to her. It is proven that even though Mrs. Dubose showed a form of ignorance and racism, he still enjoyed the time.
To many people, Mrs. Dubose is seen as racist and rude. She attacks Atticus, Scout, and Jem because of Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson, a black man. We find out later however, that Mrs. Dubose is addicted to drugs, and that she truly enjoyed Jem's company.
