The narrator lives in the Dominican Republic along with her family, and Liberty. The Republic recently got a new Dictator that was very strict.

The narrator loved her dog very much and soon became her best friend. Her mother doesn't like the dog very much. One and one night she got mad at the dog for misbehaving. The girl/Narrator took the dog to his kennel out in the backyard. When she's outside she is confronted by two men who she doesn't know.

It's no longer safe here...
She tells her parents what happened outside and things begin to change around their house. SHe realizes that it is now unsafe. Mr. Victor seems to move in overnight and is at the family house consistently. Her mother finds wires behind a picture frame at the house. The narrator isn't allowed to speak about things happening at home anymore.
Soon after everything begins to happen, Mr. Victor tells the family that they are able to leave and go to america. Her mother tells her that they cannot bring liberty. The Narrator is Inconsolable when she realizes that there is no way she cants actually bring Liberty
Liberty is left in the Dominican, but the narrator believes that he is on his way to America. In the end, Liberty taught her about personal freedom and political freedom.
