- Mathilde Loisel feels sad and disappointed of her social status. She wishes she were a rich and high society woman. She is not happy with the life she has. Her days are full of regret and sorrow.

- One day, Mr. Loisel went home and told his wife that he had received and invitation to a party, but Mathilde refused it immediately because she has no dress and no jewels to wear. He bought her a dress. In addition, she went to friend's house to borrow a necklace to look good for the party
- Climax
- After ten years of hard work and struggles the couple pays of all their debts
- Falling Action
- One day Mathilde is walking to the market and sees the friend that she borrowed the necklace from. She decides to tell her what happened
- Resolution
- The friend Mme. Forestier, tells Mathilde that the necklace was a fake. The reader left contemplating the irony of the situation
