  • 
  • The Bozeman Trail ran through the hunting grounds in the Bighorn Mountains.
  • The Sioux chief Red Cloud, appealed to the government to end white settlement on the trail.
  • In 1866 the Battle of Hundred Slain or Fetterman Massacre took place where over 80 soldiers were killed. 
  • The government agreed to close the trail.
  • In return, the Treaty of Fort Laramie was forced upon the Sioux, where the Sioux agreed to live on a reservation along the Missouri river.
  • However the leader of the Hunkpapa Sioux , Sitting Bull, never actually signed this treaty.
