- “My momma and poppa appeared from the shadows. They flew to me and wrapped their arms around me and cooled my face with their ghost tears” (148). The ghosts symbolize Isabel's past and the memories it contains. So in this situation, the ghosts of Isabel's parents are representing Isabel letting visions of her past soothe her after being scorched by a branding stick. To summarize, her past is helping her move forward, after the toughest times, especially when she is in pain.
- "One day I noticed that the plants grown from Momma's seeds had been killed by the frost, the stalks dead on the ground, with shriveled paper leaves" (202). The seeds symbolize Isabel's journey. So the seeds being dead represent Isabel's being in a depressing and miserable state. This is understandable for Captain Campbell would not accept Isabel into the army because she works for a Tory household, and the Locktons do not accept her as a person either. Lastly, the one person who cares for her, Lady Seymour is hurt due to a suspected treason fire that spread throughout New York.
- “Melancholy held me hostage, and the bees built a hive of sadness in my soul” (157). The bees symbolize Isabel's dejected thoughts. After Ruth is sold and Isabel gets branded for running away the only emotions that she has been miserable. The thoughts swarm her mind like be and they are constant and make Isabel annoyed of what she has come to, which is very similar to the loud buzzing of bees in someone's ear. Lastly, the thoughts have consumed her and the depressed ideas have taken over, which is like how bees can infest areas.
