  • In the Loving house, 5 weeks after the wedding at 2 am in the morning.
  • Both of you wake up now!!! You are under arrest for interracial marriage.
  • The opinion of the court states that you two will have to leave Virginia and not return together for a period of 25 years.
  • the couple pleaded guilty the following year. Judge Leon M. Bazile sentenced them to one year in prison, but suspended the sentence on one condition..
  • Mildred wrote a letter to then-president JFK, reaching out for help.. Kennedy referred the Lovings to the American Civil Liberties Union, which agreed to take their case. this is where their dissenting opinion would come in.
  • 1963, Bernard Cohen and Philip Hirschkop were assigned to this case. They first asked for Judge Bazile to vacate their conviction and set aside their sentences. He would refuse. this is where Oral Arguments would begin.

  • The Lawyers concurring opinions were that this was rooted to racism, and was linked to slavery.
  • They would then get it upheld, then take this to the Supreme Court of the US. This is where they would then argue that this Virginia Law went against the 14th Amendment.
  • They would then go onto win this case. While doing so, the 2 lawyers would go onto root these laws to white supremecy and racism, and no matter how hard people tried to force the Amicus Curiae Beliefs. This case went 9-0 in the court.
