During the winter, in a forest near the Carpathians, Ulrich Von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym have been fighting for years over who owns theland between them. Ulrich is searching his land because he suspects that Georg is on his land.
The two men run into each other by the trunk of a tree staring at each other with their guns in their hands. Suddenly, the harsh storm cause the tree to fall on top of both of them. They both couldn't move, and they started arguing over who's men would reach them first.
Ulrich realizes that there is no reason for the two men to be fighting, and he offers Georg a drink from his flask, attempting to be kind, but Georg refuses the offer.
Ulrich proposes the idea that if his men came first, he would have his men save Georg first, and that the two men could be friends. After Georg thinks about the offer he states that he would do the same for Ulrich if his men came first, and states that he would be Ulrich’s friend after they both got out.
The two men yell for help, and Ulrich sees figures running through the forest.
Georg asks Ulrigh if they are his men, and Ulrich realises that the figures are not either of their men. He chuckles with a nervous laugh because he realises that the figures are wolves.
