Douglass then starts a sabbath school to teach other slaves how to read, even though it was illegal. Mr. Freeland let Douglass do this which showed how less cruel of a slave owner Mr. Freeland is. Being able to read gave the slaves the idea to escape slavery, which showed them how unfair it is to be forced to make actions you don’t want to make. “A is the first letter of the alphabet.” said Douglass. “A is used in many words including bad, and sad. Let’s starts writing the letter A.” Douglass kept teaching many slaves and didn't stop. Douglass was able to teach 40 slaves how to read, which was very useful. It was as if Douglass has flooded the slaves’ minds with new ideas, new thoughts. But eventually, the slaveholders knew about the school. They didn't like the way the slaves were getting taught how to read and shut down the whole school. Douglass was not able to teach any other slave how to read and that made him upset. But with the other 40 slaves, he was able to convince some of them into escaping with him when they come up with a good plan.
Douglass is a slave that was sent to work for Mr. Freeland in January ,1834. Mr. Freeland is a slave owner that treats Douglass better than Douglass’ last slave breaker, Covey. Douglass was getting whipped countless times when he was working for Covey, even though he wouldn't be doing anything wrong. Douglass was sent to go to Mr.Freeland because he needed some slaves working on his field taking care of it and because Covey is unable to hurt Douglass from the fight. Douglass does not want to live his life as a slave and he starts thinking about escaping slavery. But If he is caught escaping, he could get sent back to bondage, (or slavery) or even killed. Douglass would have to be prudent thinking or talking about escaping slavery, or he would get in serious trouble.
Douglass tried to convince other slaves to escape with him and help create a plan. “Hey John, can we talk privately?”, said Douglass. “Ok, about what?” answered John in a curios voice. “ I have been thinking about escaping this cruel world and becoming free. I need you in order to make this successful so we can help each other.” “Frederick, you know it’s going to be very dangerous, we can get killed! There's no way I will be helping you. You shouldn't try escaping either. you know all the consequences.”, said John in a scared tone. “But you know how unjust they are. It’s not fair we have to get treated this way and you know it.” said Douglass. John paused for a moment and answered saying, “ Ok fine but we cant tell anyone else, and we have to be quick about escaping.” Douglass, Henry, and John were able to make a plan to escape on a Saturday night. Instead of walking and running to freedom, they will be using a canoe so they won't be seen as slaves from far away but as fisherman, looking for some fish. They would have to travel for more than 70 miles, just following the north star. Since Douglass was able to read and write, he was able to write fake protections or letter which gives them permission to go to another location. The protections were usually given by the slave master to send them to a location for a specific reason, this case the Easter holiday. Of course the protections Douglass wrote were fake, but they would help greatly if they were questioned for any reason.
