  • Charles the ll was a young and popular ruler.He reopened theaters and taverns as the years went on.Later on Charles accepted the petition of right.Even with sharing his fathers believes, he still had Catholic sympathies.
  • In 1685 Charles brother, James ll inherited the throne.James practiced the Catholic religion openly and others feared he might try to reopen Roman Catholic Churches.
  • The people did not like having that threat in charge therefore they forced him to flee.Afterwords in 1688 parliament leaders James daughter Mary and her husband William lll of orange to take his place.
  • Later on the pressure and got to James and he finally agreed to flee.Me moved to France and was rarely seen again by his family.This situation makes up what is called the Glorious Revolution.
  • William and Mary were required to accept multiple acts passed by Parliament in 1689 before they could be crowned.This is also known as the English Bill Of Rights.The bill guarantees the superiority of Parliament over monarchy.
  • After being crowned, a separate act was passed named the Toleration Act.This act ensured Limited religious freedom toPuritans, Quakers and other dissenters.Still only members of the Church of England could hold public office.Lastly Catholics were not allowed religious freedom.
