Jonas' assignment was to be the Receiver of Memory. He will feel great pain, receive memories, and have the Capacity to See Beyond. He will also answer the questions of the Elders.
The rules for Jonas' training include: Can be rude. Cannot discuss your training with anyone. Cannot tell your dreams to your family unit. Cannot take any medication unless for illness or injury. Cannot apply for release. Can lie.
The Giver's house furniture differs from the other homes in the community. But the most important difference was the amount of books he had. He had way more books than Jonas had ever seen.
The Giver gave Jonas the memory of snow on the first day. Jonas was mesmerized by the experience. He perceived the word sled and slid down a hill on it. Then, Jonas felt great pain, as the Giver gave him the memory of the sun and a sunburn.
The community cannot make decisions because they would have free will, and would realize what was going on around them. Then people in charge would lose control because the community would start fighting back.
"Seeing Beyond" is a term used exclusively for The Giver and The Receiver of Memory. It means that they get to see things that no one else sees because they have a gift. They get to experience the way things used to be before the climate-controlled, feeling-less, colorless, world they live in now.
