The king of the beasts is fallen
They pulled on the ropes, which they'd hidden under a blanket of dead leaves, and the poor lion realized that the pit was lined with a net. The hunters drew it so tightly around him that he couldn't open his mouth. Slowly, like sailors hoisting the mainsail, the hunters dragged him out of the pit. They tied him, still trapped in the net, to a stout pole.
Toward morning the hunters stopped for a rest. The lion was a heavy beast, and they were exhausted. One of the hunters lit a fire, and after eating some bread and cheese the men fell asleep. The lion tried to sleep too, but he couldn't. His mane was itching. Something was scurrying around his fur. "it must be fleas" he thought.
The creatures scurrying around in the lion's mane were not fleas. They were somewhat bigger. It was the mouse and its children mice who came to aid him. The mice nibbled the rope and suddenly the net fell from around the lion's head. The lion thanked the mouse and he left leaping away into the tall grass. His roar woke up the hunters, who began chasing him. The mouse and its children had a wonderfull feast from the food the hunters left behind.
