  • "Now that Salva was without Uncle`s care and protection, the group`s attitude toward him changed.Once again,they grumbled that he was too young and small"(Park 65).
  • "There is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless"(Park 66).
  • "Her sickness came from the water"(Park 45).
  • "She should drink only good clean water"(Park 45).
  • "As Salva walked, the same thoughts kept going through his head in rhythm with his steps. 'Where are we going? Where is my family? When will I see them again? ' "( Park 9).
  •  External  Conflict (Man vs. Society) The death of uncle,Jewiir effected the group`s attitude toward Salva. Because the group believes Salva is too small and too young to understand and help the group. Also,the Dinka tribe believed Salva would slow the group down. The society that Salva lived in didn`t believe in Salva, and that he could be as strong as the older men.
  • External Conflict (Man vs. Nature) Nya`s younger sister got sick from the dirty water her tribe, the Nuers digged out. Now whatever water Nya and her tribe find needs to be boiled to make the water clean and healthy. However, when the water boiles half of it evaporates.    
  • Internal Conflict (Man vs. Himself) Salva is a this school when gun fire rings out. He then runs away to save himself and doesn`t know how to get back home. In every footstep he asks himself "Where is my family?" Salva has to overcome his negative thoughts and sadness.
