Fredrick Douglass was a slave in Baltimore. He barley knew his mom and he didn’t even know who his dad was. Also, he didn’t know his own birthday, like you and I do. Douglass moved from place to place. He did many jobs from helping family’s home to working in plantation. Douglass was actually happy going to Baltimore. He thought that maybe it would be a good change for him. However, it was good at first, but something changed.
He was bought by a family named the Auld’s. Mr. Auld was a cruel man who didn’t really care about Douglass and treated him awfully. Mrs. Auld, his wife, was a generous woman to Douglass and treated him like she would treat anyone else. He saw her as a kind-hearted women. Which she was until she became a terrible and worse version of herself.
Douglass didn’t get much of an education because he was a slave. When Mrs. Auld found out he couldn’t read she wanted to teach him. She ended up teaching Douglass the alphabet. Mrs. Auld had to stop because Mr. Auld stopped her immediately after. Mr. Auld said “ It’s is against the law to teach the slave to read.” Mrs. Auld replied, “ But he is just a kid”. Mr. Auld said “It doesn’t matter, he is a slave”. She didn’t really understand why because he was a kid like any other.
