Fredrick heard their conversation and he was immediately shattered. What he heard was sunk in him and they where remembered forever. Later on after that Mrs. Auld attitude slowly changed toward Fredrick. She would yell at him to go do errands and make him work in the heat. She would say “Don’t be lazy boy it’s not that cold”.Their was another slave working with him and she would make sure to forget something when he went for errands so he would come back and do it again. Mrs.Auld would also make him work in the freezing cold and rain.Fredrick noticed that she degrated lower than her husband
He couldn’t understand how such a symapathic and gracious could become such a hideous and ignorant person. She and her husband would watch to make sure he was never reading. He would always have to sneak around when he wanted to read. She went down to such a low level he didn’t even recognize her. That’s when Douglass noticed that people would see him only as a slave. He wanted to change that.
So she ended up stopping to teach Douglass. But, he found a way to get kids on the street to teach him when he was doing errands for the Auld’s. But him learning to read changed his life. After everything one thing Douglass noticed is that the power Mrs. Auld have over him changed how she saw him.But one thing he didn’t understand is that he was a slave because of something he can’t control. He knew that just because of skin and where his family was from he was going to be in this position for the most of his life. But that wasn’t going to stop him.
