Giles Corey: "This man is killing his neighbors for their land!"
Danforth: Ah? And the other girls? Susanna Walcott, and - the others? They arealso pretending?
Danforth: I cannot hear you.
Mary Warren: Aye, sir.
Proctor: It were pretense, she says.
Mary Warren: It were pretense, sir
Proctor: My wife pregnant!
Danforth: We have thought it too convenient to be credited. However, if Ishould tell you now that I will let her be kept another month; and if she begin toshow her natural signs, you shall have her living yet another year until she isdelivered - what say you to that? Come now. Yousay your only purpose is to save your wife. Good, then, she is saved at least thisyear, and a year is long. What say ' you, sir? It is done now. Will you drop this charge?
Danforth: Mr. Proctor, this morning, your wife send me a claim in which shestates that she is pregnant now."
Act 3 begins when Giles Corey and Francis Nurse barge into the courtroom to save their wives. They say that they have proof that the claims made in the courtroom are false and that they are only accusing them so they can take their land.
"Abigail: No, sir. "
Danforth: These will be sufficient. Sit you down, children. Silently they sit.Your friend, Mary Warren, has given us a deposition. In which she swears thatshe never saw familiar spirits, apparitions, nor any manifest of the Devil. Sheclaims as well that none of you have seen"
Mary Warren and John proctor entered the room. Mary Warren then testifies that she and the other girls were making it up and pretending about the witchcraft.
Danforth, sharply to Parris: Bring her out! And tell her not one word of what’sbeen spoken here. And let you knock before you enter. Parris goes out. Now weshall touch the bottom of this swamp. To Proctor: Your wife, you say, is anhonest woman."
"Proctor, his voice about to break, and his shame great: In the proper place - where mybeasts are bedded. On the last........"
Elizabeth claims to be pregnant. She will not be hanged until after she delivers. Danforth asks if he will drop his condemnation of the court, but Proctor refuses.
Ahhhhhhhhhh (Abigail) with a weird, wild, chilling cry, screams up to the ceiling.
(Repeat after Mary) STOP
Mary Warren confesses and Abigail denies her testimony.
"Abigail, stepping up to Danforth: What look do you give me? Danforth cannotspeak. I’ll not have such looks! She turns and starts for the door."
