  • Rhea Silvia was a virgin and the daughter of King Numitor, who was overthrown by his brother Amulius. In some sources, Rhea Silvia conceived Romulus and Remus when their father, the god Mars, visited her.
  • There are stories on how Romulus & Remus wound up in the Tiber River In one, King Amulius ordered them to be killed and they were abandoned to die. Another says their mother & father had a servant take them.
  • The boys were found by a she-wolf called Lupa who nursed them in her lair in Palatine Hill until they were found by a shepherd and his wife, who raised them as shepherds.
  • As young adults they made a name for themselves. Remus was kidnapped byt the King. Romulus learned of their past and joined forces with their grandfather to restore him to the throne and save Remus.
  • They wanted to build a city. Romulus liked Palatine Hill, Remus preferred Aventine Hill. They argued and agreed to seek the gods' approval through a augury. They still ended up in a fight that killed Remus.
  • Romulus worked on his city, He made himself king, & named it Rome after himself & not after Remus. The city grew and prospered. For over 1,000 years Rome would be one of the most powerful cities in the world.
