It was May 23, 1838. The Cherokee Tribe was sent on the longest march in their history. It was known as the Trail of Tears. They were sent by the US Troops, West to Oklahoma. They were held at bayonet point throughout. It was a tough march, and many were lost on the journey. The march lasted until March of 1839.
They wanted our land to grow their own crops. They thought we had too much land, so they sent us west. Jackson thought we were a waste of space. He thought we would harm people if he let us stay. He didn't like the fact that we had better land.
About 3,000 of our people died on this Trail of Tears. Our elders and infants were the ones mostly lost. We lost our land because of the removal act. When the march was over, there was only about 57,000 of us left
