Merlyn was the most impactful character on Wart. Wart met Merlyn while in the woods while he searched for the hawk named Cully. Merlyn became Wart's tutor and told Wart that he was living a backwards life. He aided Wart along his journey to being king teaching him lessons by turning him into animals. pg 37 "Are you coming home with me. Why not how else can I be your tutor."
The badger was another character who left an impact on Wart. When meeting with the badger, wart was told about the beginning of man and how they became dominant. Wart was told that everyone was once the same but man chose to stay how he was created. Everyone including animals were once equal and should be treated that way. pg 191 "all embryos look the same. They are what you are before you are born--and, whether you are going to be a tadpole or a peacock or a camelopard or a man..."
Mr. P although he almost killed Wart, left a lasting impact on him. The fish taught Wart that power is mightier than anything else. He taught wart that power of the mind was not enough. He told Wart that he needed physical power as well. He made Wart realize that in order to rule he needed to have both physical and mental power. "There is nothing, except power which you pretend to seek: power to grind and power to digest, power to seek and power to find..." Pg 52
