On the page with a picture of the island, and page 4 of Al Capone Does My Shirts, it shows that Moose lives in Apartment 2B on Alcatraz. In this image, Moose is in the apartment watching Natalie while she eats her lemon cake.
On page 82 of Al Capone Does My Shirts it says. "I've lined up some piano lessons to teach in the city.....we need the money, Moose. Carrie Kelly costs a small fortune and so does Esther P. Marinoff....." In this image, Moose's mom is teaching piano lessons to get money.
I'm happy Natalie is going to a good school, but I do so much work, and get paid barely enough money to keep us going....
On pages 128 and 207 of Al capone Does My Shirts, it mentions that Piper's mother censors the mail to make sure that letters to convicts, especially Al Capone, are good enough to be sent over. This image shows Piper's mom sorting through the convict mail.
The author was correct! On alcatrazhistory.com it said, "...Living areas for families were Building #64, three apartment buildings, a large duplex house, and four large wooden houses for the senior officers. In this image, Moose, Natalie, and their mother are saying bye to the father who is going to do guard duty. Another guard is standing off in the distance going to their shift as well.
The author was correct about guards not getting paid well on Alcatraz. On alcatraz101.com it says, "After all, an Alcatraz correctional officer was only paid about $1,700 a year in 1934...." This image shows Moose's dad sitting on his bed and thinking about the small amount of money he makes.
The author switched it up with this one,so the mail wasn't actually censored by the warden's wife. On the website alcatrazhistory.com it said, "...All letters both in-coming and out-going were to be screened and type-written after being censored by prison officials." This image shows a prison official going through the convict mail.
