This is Sally. It is her first time flying in an airplane and she wonders how high her plane would be in the air.
If Sally's plane is 500 ft in the air and going at a 53 degree angle but she doesn't know how many feet it is in length. We can find this out by doing tan(53) = 500/x which would equal 378.78 ft. Meaning that the plane is just about 379 ft long.
They have to make a stop flight before they can get to their final destination.
On the next flight, Sally knows that they are 950 ft in the air and the plane is 900 ft long but she wants to figure out at what degree they are flying up she can do the equation tan-1 (950/900) which equals 46.54 degrees. Therefore, the plane is going up at about a 47 degree angle.
On the flight back home Sally knows that the plane is 400 ft long going up at a 68 degree angle but don't know how many feet the plane is in the air. She can figure this out by using the equation tan(68) =x/400 which will equal 988 ft. So the plane is 988 ft in the air. Sally had fun on her vacation and learned that being on an airplane isn't so bad.
