Rip Van Winkle was a simple man. He was a well mannered man. His wife was not, she was cruel and very rude towards him. His children were ragged and took after his manners. He did not make too much money. One day he was sent off into the forest with his gun.
He went into the forest and met some mysterious man who held a keg. He carried the keg for the man and he was offered a drink. He passed out and fell asleep for twenty years.
Rip did not recognize anyone in town. Only one person recognized him. He found his daughter and her grandchild and was able to convince her that he was her father. She and her child were all that Rip had left.
