Ancient Greeks traveled by sea. Land was too hard to travel through, because Greece was in a peninsula.
Greeks lived on farms or small villages. Most people made their living by farming, but it wasn't easy in the mountains. Lack of space made Greek settlements fight over the space they had.
Greek colonies were created because there wasn't enough farmland. Voyages had to be made to create colonies. Greeks created colonies for more than 300 years. These colonies helped spread Greek culture.
Greek colonies traded with each other, city-states, and the mainland for goods. Grain, timber, and metal were exchanged for olive oil and pottery.
