Our story begins with our narrator begging us to believe that he is not insane although he killed a man over something silly. He says that he killed the man because his eye looked "evil".
Who's - ahh!
He lived with a wealthy old man in his house, and they were on polite terms. Our narrator says that he loved the old man, but his eye, that looked like a vulture's and a had a film over it, frightened him.
Tis I who screamed officers, but please, feel free to look around the house.
For seven nights, our narrator would peek into the old man's bedroom until he saw the "evil eye". On the eighth night, he snuck inside and shone the lantern's light on the eye, and was careful not to make a sound.
Alright, I confess. Just make it stop!
Our narrator inadvertently woke up the old man, and before he could utter a single sentence, our narrator suffocated him with a pillow. He held it over him until his heart stopped beating.
After hiding the body under the wooden floor, the narrator made sure to get rid of the evidence. A few minutes later, the police arrived, saying that a neighbor had heard a scream and suspected that someone had been murdered.
After the police had looked around, our narrator invited them to stay and rest. While the officers were talking, our narrator heard a noise; it grew louder and louder no matter how loud he strained his voice. He then confessed, and the old man's heartbeat ceased.
