The population grew rapidly mostly because of immigration. Germans were at war and Ireland didn't have enough money or went into a drought. Blacks weren't treated fairly. No paved roads, no sewers, and diseases spread rapidly through cities.

New Orleans was the center of trade because it was on the mouth of the Mississippi. Plantation owners were at the top, white farmers and workers in the middle class and slaves or blacks at the bottom. 10% of whites were illiterate, sons went to college and wifes usually stayed home.
