  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Suspicion and fear can lead to violence
  • In this scene Charlie shoots Van Horn because he thinks that it is an alien even though he had no idea who it was. He just suspected it was him so he killed him.
  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is that fear and suspicion can lead to great violence. There are many pieces of evidence from the text that support this theme. One example is when Van Horn walks down the street and Charlie kills him with the shotgun. He killed him out of suspicions and he did not even make an attempt to see who it was. This lead to a snowball effect when everyone becomes scared and starts to make their blames and suspicions.  Charlie shooting Van Horn made almost everyone think that he is the alien. They start throwing rocks at Charlie and his house because they think that he is the alien. Glass starts to chatter and Charlie gets cut. This eventually leads to Charlie blaming Tommy in thought that it would save him. Everyone is making their blames and chaos starts to break out. Everyone is running around and throwing rocks and it just becomes full on chaos. The last example of this theme is right at the end when there are two aliens talking to each other, looking over the town. One is literally explaining to the other that this is the exact same thing that happens on every town. They are discussing that all you need to do is make people suspect things of each other and make them try to find a scapegoat and they will almost destroy themselves. And one of the aliens even points out that this is the same cycle every time. The people end up destroying themselves because of suspicion and fear.
  • In this scene, everyone thinks that Charlie is the alien so they throw rocks at him and they destroy the windows and chaos ensues.
  • In this scene, there are 2 aliens are looking over the town discussing that all you need to do is make people suspect things of other people and it is the same pattern. People will just suspect and then they will destroy each other.
