Grendel Attacks Herot
"Your hall will soon be mine"
"The monster’s Thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws: He slipped through the door and there in the silence Snatched up thirty men, smashed them" (lines 34-40)
Beowulf Arrives at Herot
"Oh please defeat the monster who terrorizes our land"
"Now go to him as you are, in your armor and helmets, But leave your battle-shields here, and your spears, Let them lie waiting for the promises your words May make.” (lines 151-154)
In this scene the soldiers in Herot are rejoicing and singing while recalling the beauty of the Earth. This scene helps set the mood of what Herot is, a place of peace. While in Herot the soldiers sing day after day under the ruling of Hrothgar.
Grendel Meets Beowulf
"That Shepherd of evil, Guardian of crime, knew at once the nowhere on earth had he met a man whose hands were harder; His mind flooded with fear" (lines 273-276)
Grendel comes to hall with the intent of destroying Herot. When Grendel gets there he sees Hrothgar's men sleeping, giving him the perfect opportunity for revenge. Grendel kills 30 sleeping men then returns back to his home in the darkness.
Beowulf Defeats Grendel
"The victory, for the proof, hanging high From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s Arm, claw and shoulder and all." (lines 357-359)
Beowulf and his men arrive at Herot after hearing about Grendel's gruesome attack. When they arrive they are formally meeted by Wulfar. Wulfgar tells them thet Hrothgar wishes for them to leave their weapons at the door as Herot is not a place of war.
Grendel's Mother Attacks
"Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons But so massive that no ordinary man could liftIts carved and decorated length." (lines 513-517)
After Grendel has entered Herot in attempt to kill as many as he could he finally meets Beowulf. Grendel fears his life as Beowulf has no similarities to any other men Grendel has met. In an attempt to fight Beowulf, Grendel is defeated and killed by Beowulf.
"I will defeat you and protect this land"
Beowulf and Grendel begin to fight and the fight ends as soon as it started. Beowulf has defeated Grendel by pulling off his arm during their battle in Herot. Grendel then returns to his home in the swamp to die.
"I have defeated the evil monster, we must now rejoice"
After Grendel leaves Herot to return to his swamp to die, Grendel's mother is furious. Grendel's mother attacks Herot in revenge of her sons death. Beowulf has no fear when it comes to Grendel's mother. Beowulf goes down to her underwater cave and kills her with an ancient sword.
