Today we will be discussing the effects of the Cold War on Ukraine.
Ukraine was one of the first countries in the USSR. After the war however, it declared independence and allied itself with NATO.
During and after the Cold War alliances changed.
There was conflict of borders after the war.
Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine. This has caused dispute between two former USSR allies and former soviet land.
Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons to make peace. It also lost a valuable military area in Crimea to Russia as it is trying to form new bonds with other nations.
All other factors also led to military troubles for Ukraine.
Russia's annexation of Crimea has interfered with the President's reelction campaign. It has also effected their political stance, pushing them into closer relations with the US and away from Russia.
Post Cold War Ukraine has had political troubles too.
After Russia invaded Crimea and seized ships it put monetary pressure on Kiev. Russia still provides Ukraine with gas after a ten year agreement even though they seized valuable energy and mining sectors.
Ukraine's economics have also suffered from the post Cold War relations.
