  • Today we will be discussing the effects of the Cold War on Ukraine.
  • Ukraine was one of the first countries in the USSR. After the war however, it declared independence and allied itself with NATO.
  • During and after the Cold War alliances changed.
  • There was conflict of borders after the war.
  • Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine.This has caused dispute between two former USSR allies and former soviet land.
  • Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons to make peace. It also lost a valuable military area in Crimea to Russia as it is trying to form new bonds with other nations.
  • All other factors also led to military troubles for Ukraine.
  • Russia's annexation of Crimea has interfered with the President's reelction campaign.It has also effected their political stance, pushing them into closer relations with the US and away from Russia.
  • Post Cold War Ukraine has had political troubles too.
  • After Russia invaded Crimea and seized ships it put monetary pressure on Kiev. Russia still provides Ukraine with gas after a ten year agreement even though they seized valuable energy and mining sectors.
  • Ukraine's economics have also suffered from the post Cold War relations.
