  • The main protagonist in the book is Louis Zamperini. Born in New York in 1917, he got into lots of trouble growing up. He liked to cause trouble and havoc around his high school and neighborhood.
  • In order to stop him from this, his older brother, Pete signed him up for track. He became an immediate sensation, even competing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

  • When WWII broke out, he became a airman

  • One of the symbols in "Unbroken" is the bomber. In the story, Zamperini's crew flew in a B-24 Liberator
  •  During a mission, his plane crashed in the ocean
  • After stranded at sea for over a month, they were taken in by Japanese soldiers to a POW camp in Japan. He spent two years there until it was liberated in 1945.
