All believers are equal! If a church official tells you to do something you do not think is right then you can choose to ignore that church official.
I want you to issue my papal bull. It must have a bunch of insulting words for Luther. Also burn all of Luther's writings. Finally, warn the people that anyone following Luther would be considered a heretic.
Do you recant what you have written?
"Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen."
Luther taught that all believers were equal. He said that if any church official told a person to do something against his own conscience or forbidden by the Bible, then he should ignore the church official.
You heretic! We will give you 21 days of safety and after that anyone could legally kill you.
The Pope issued the Papal Bull. In his Papal bull, the Pope attacked Luther. The Pope required all members of the church to burn Luther's writings and warned that anyone following Luther would be considered a heretic.

We no longer have to obey the pope. We are gonna join the Protestant Reformation. See ya.
The Diet declared Luther a heretic and criminal. They gave him twenty-one days of safety. After that, anyone could legally murder Luther.
Fortunately, Luther had a powerful friend, Prince Frederick of Saxony. The Prince ordered his men to kidnap Luther to keep him safe. Luther hid in a castle for ten months.
The people no longer believed they had to obey the Pope. These people who protested against the practices and beliefs of the church came to be called Protestants.
