  • In 1739, when almost 90% of the population of the South had slaved, African Americans, More than 50 enslaved people revolted near the Stono River in South Carolina

  • The armed planters, with their leader Jemmy, had defeated the rebels, some headed to St. Augustine, where the Spanish government promised them freedom.
  • But, the South Carolina militia pursued them.
  • Gottem!!
  • The Militia killed everyone suspected of being involved with the revolt.
  • The rebellion had sent fear through the American Colonies.
