In the era of the Jim Crow Laws, most facilities were segregated. A quote from the Plessy vs Ferguson was that facilities should be equal but separate. Black people were treated with slugs and they did not have hugs.
Freedmen and women were treated very poorly throughout segregation. Blacks were under control of the black codes. They were limited a lot of opportunities that white people had like voting. Blacks had to pay a poll tax or take a literacy test to even vote.
A lot of people did not agree with blacks being almost equal to them. some people took the radical approach to solve this issue and formed a klan known as the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan would burn black’s houses down or burn a cross at their church which is a sign of lynching.
